Bernina Aotearoa Quilters Challenge - Exhibition

This is the ninth biennial challenge for members of Aotearoa Quilters which is a NZ wide association. Bernina is the major sponsor, offering a sewing machine as the main prize for the winner, but there is also other sponsors such as Resene and several quilt and patchwork businesses.
There were 27 entries this year and 20 were selected by Dorothy Smith a quilt maker of long experience from Stratford, and John McLean from Pukearuhe North Taranaki, a well known artist/painter.
Each quilt had to be of a size measuring 60cm wide and 120cm high and be an interpretation on the theme “Growth”. The winner was Kathleen Burford from Christchurch her entry entitled “Mother Earth” and Natalie Murdoch who has a studio at Mangatarata (Ngatea area) received a Merit award for her entry “Darling Buds of May” .
The quilts have come from Wellington and will be sent to Christchurch for their next showing in late October. There are 3 quilts from women in the Coromandel area area (Thames and Pauanui) 3 from Whakatane area, one from Tauranga. The quilts are all for sale and 2 have already been sold. They range in price from $260 - $1100.
