Museum Research Facility

The Waihi Arts Centre and Museum has a Research Facility with access to a wide range of family history, mining company and archival records. Please download a Research Request form and forward with your payment to P O Box 149 Waihi.



above left: December 2000, The replica poppet head is hoisted into position. Winding wheels, side bracing and illumination completed the construction which is visible from all entrances to Waihi.

above right: The poppet head is a full size replica of No.4 shaft and was constructed on its side then lifted into position by two cranes.


left: In recent years the Mines Rescue team has used the poppet head to practice their rope skills.

bottom right and left: 1n 2010 the historic Grand Junction Refinery Building was moved to a new location close to the Pit Rim Walkway. The refinery is the only intact building left from the Grand Junction mine.

The building has remained largely undisturbed over the years. The shuttered/louvre style vent system on the roof is a distinctive feature of the refinery building.
